Will AI replace data analysts?

AI is taking the routine half of the job. Data analysis scores 22.5/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Commoditized): pulling data, cleaning it, charting it and summarising it is digital, rule-bound work that AI tools now do on request in plain English. The protected part is knowing which question matters, spotting when the numbers mislead, and persuading people to act on the answer.

Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.

How the score breaks down

Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.

Why each dimension scores the way it does

Automation Replaceability2 / 5 · 6.25 of 25 pts

Rated 2. Writing SQL, building pivot tables, cleaning messy columns, producing charts and drafting a summary of what changed last month are now things a manager can ask an AI assistant to do directly. That removes much of the request queue that keeps many analysts busy. It rates 2 rather than 1 because finding the right data in real company systems and checking it is trustworthy still take a person.

Regulatory & Liability Friction2 / 5 · 5 of 20 pts

Rated 2. Health data, financial reporting and privacy law impose controls on how data is handled and who can see it, and some analyses feed numbers that executives must stand behind. But analysis itself is unlicensed, and an analyst rarely carries personal liability for a wrong chart, so regulation shapes how the work is done without requiring a human to do it.

Human Judgment Density3 / 5 · 7.5 of 15 pts

Rated 3, the strongest dimension. Turning a vague business question into an analysis that answers it, noticing that a metric is misleading, and deciding what to recommend all require context about the business that models frequently get wrong. BLS lists making business recommendations to stakeholders as a core duty of data scientists, and that is the part of the work judgment protects.

Physical-World Coupling1 / 5 · 0 of 15 pts

Rated 1. The work lives entirely in databases, spreadsheets, notebooks and dashboards, and it can be done from anywhere. Nothing in the workflow requires a person to be somewhere or handle something physical, which removes one of the main brakes on automation that protects trades and field work.

Trust & Relationship Lock-In2 / 5 · 3.75 of 15 pts

Rated 2. Stakeholders do trust an analyst who knows the business and has been right before, and that reputation matters for big decisions. But for routine questions, a self-serve AI tool that answers in seconds is often good enough, and many managers will skip the request to the analytics team once they can ask the data directly.

AI Capital Intensity1 / 5 · 0 of 10 pts

Rated 1. AI analysis features are being built into the spreadsheet, database and business intelligence software companies already pay for. Adopting them needs no new infrastructure and no frontier-scale budget, and the capability improves with every update, so cost is not a barrier to replacing routine analysis.

Which analysis tasks AI takes first

BLS does not track data analysts separately, so these duties follow its description of data scientists, the closest occupation. Sorted by exposure:

Most exposed to AI

  • Collecting, categorising and cleaning data
  • Writing routine queries and recurring reports
  • Building charts and dashboards with visualisation software
  • Summarising what changed in the numbers and why it might have

Most durable

  • Deciding which data is available and actually useful for a question
  • Validating models and spotting when results are wrong or misleading
  • Making business recommendations to stakeholders based on the analysis
  • Helping the business decide where AI should and should not be trusted

The labor market today

Data scientists: median pay (May 2025)$120,230
Data scientists: jobs (2025)275,600
Data scientists: projected growth, 2025–35+35%
Data scientists: openings per year, on average≈24,800
Typical entry-level educationBachelor's degree

BLS has no separate category for data analysts. The closest is Data Scientists (SOC 15-2051), which these figures describe; BLS describes that work as building, testing and updating models and algorithms, a more technical job than the reporting and dashboard work in many analyst roles. BLS projects much faster than average growth, driven by demand for data-driven decisions and by firms integrating AI-based systems into their workflows.

Read together, the split is the story. The modelling and AI-integration end of data work is growing quickly, while the query-and-report end is what AI tools now do on request. An analyst whose job is mostly the second kind of work is exposed even in a growing field.

Questions people ask

Will AI replace data analysts?

AI is replacing much of the routine work: queries, cleaning, charts and summaries. Analysts whose value is judgment, domain knowledge and recommendations are much safer, and the more technical data science end of the field is growing quickly.

BLS projects 35% growth for data scientists. Why is the score so low?

BLS counts how many data scientists employers will hire, mostly for modelling and AI work. The index scores the typical analyst's tasks, which are digital, unlicensed and cheap to automate. A field can grow while its entry-level reporting work is automated.

Is data analytics still a good career?

As a starting point, yes, if you plan to move up quickly. Use the analyst role to learn the business and the data, then build toward modelling, engineering or decision ownership rather than staying in report production.
