Will AI replace paralegals?
AI is taking a large share of the work, though not every job. Paralegals score 33.8/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Commoditized). Legal research and document drafting are text-heavy, precedent-driven tasks that language models handle well, and BLS now cites artificial intelligence as a limit on demand. The protected work involves people, courts and evidence, and checking AI output before a lawyer signs it.
Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.
How the score breaks down
Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.
| Dimension | Weight | Rating | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation Replaceability | 25% | 2 / 5 | 6.25 |
| Regulatory & Liability Friction | 20% | 3 / 5 | 10 |
| Human Judgment Density | 15% | 2 / 5 | 3.75 |
| Physical-World Coupling | 15% | 2 / 5 | 3.75 |
| Trust & Relationship Lock-In | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| AI Capital Intensity | 10% | 2 / 5 | 2.5 |
| Total | 100% | 33.8 |
Points are exact; the scoring engine rounds the total to one decimal.
Why each dimension scores the way it does
Rated 2. Researching laws and regulations, summarising documents, drafting routine correspondence and contracts, and organising case files are core paralegal duties and core strengths of legal AI tools. BLS says AI is expected to make research and document preparation more efficient. It rates 2 rather than 1 because interviewing witnesses, obtaining statements and supporting a trial still put a person in the room.
Rated 3. Law is one of the most regulated professions, but the regulation protects lawyers more than paralegals. A licensed attorney signs filings and answers to the court and the bar for them, and BLS notes that paralegal certification is not required. Courts have sanctioned lawyers for filing AI-invented citations, which keeps a careful human checker in demand, and that role often falls to a paralegal.
Rated 2. Much of the job is procedural: formatting filings, tracking deadlines, assembling exhibits and following court rules. Those steps reward accuracy more than judgment. The strategic calls, such as what to argue, what to concede and what to tell the client, belong to the supervising lawyer, so the judgment that protects legal work sits mostly one rung up.
Rated 2. Most of the work is documents on a screen, and electronic filing has removed many trips to the courthouse. Some physical work remains: handling exhibits and taking notes during trials, gathering evidence, and meeting witnesses to obtain affidavits. That is enough to keep this above the minimum, but not enough to slow automation of the desk work.
Rated 3. Lawyers depend on a paralegal who knows their cases, their clients and their habits, and continuity matters in long matters where details accumulate over years. Clients often speak to the paralegal more than to the lawyer. Still, the client's formal relationship and trust run to the attorney and the firm, which limits how much this protects the paralegal role itself.
Rated 2. Legal AI is a specialised product: it needs legal data, confidentiality controls and accuracy checks, and the strongest tools are priced for firms rather than individuals. That slows adoption at small practices for now. But firms buy these tools rather than build them, prices are falling, and large firms are already deploying them widely.
Which paralegal tasks AI takes first
BLS lists the core duties of paralegals and legal assistants. Sorted by exposure:
Most exposed to AI
- Researching laws, regulations and legal articles relevant to a case
- Drafting correspondence and legal documents such as contracts
- Gathering, organising and maintaining legal documents
- Scheduling interviews, meetings and depositions
Most durable
- Investigating and gathering the facts of a case
- Obtaining affidavits and other formal statements for use as evidence
- Helping lawyers during trials with exhibits, notes and transcripts
- Checking AI-drafted research and documents before a lawyer relies on them
The labor market today
| Median annual pay (May 2025) | $62,890 |
| Jobs (2025) | 404,900 |
| Projected change, 2025–35 | 0% (little or no change) |
| Openings per year, on average | ≈40,800 |
| Typical entry-level education | Associate's degree |
BLS projects little or no change in employment from 2025 to 2035 and says demand is expected to be limited by advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, which make research and document preparation more efficient. Most projected openings come from replacing workers who leave. Law firms are expected to remain the largest employer.
That makes paralegals one of the clearer cases of AI showing up in an official outlook: the tools do not remove the need for legal support, but each paralegal can cover more work, so the number of new jobs stalls even as legal work continues.
How to raise your resistance
- Become the firm's AI checker. Every AI-drafted brief, summary and citation needs verifying before a lawyer signs it. Being the person who knows where the tools fail is the fastest-growing part of the role.
- Specialise where facts come from people. Litigation, investigations and trial support depend on interviews, evidence and courtroom logistics. Transactional document work is more exposed.
- Own a practice area. Deep knowledge of one area, such as immigration, real estate or e-discovery, and its procedures makes you the person lawyers rely on rather than a general document processor.
- Earn credentials that carry weight. Certification is not required, but some employers prefer or require it, and a few states now license legal paraprofessionals to handle limited matters for clients directly. Credentials that move you toward accountability move you away from exposure.
This score rates the occupation as a whole. Your exposure depends on what you actually do all day. The free Job Safety score asks about your specific role and day-to-day work, then scores you on four personal factors in about a minute.
Score my job — freeQuestions people ask
Will AI replace paralegals?
AI is replacing a large share of paralegal tasks, especially research and document drafting, and BLS now cites artificial intelligence as a limit on demand. It projects little or no change in paralegal employment from 2025 to 2035 rather than a collapse, so the job is shrinking in scope more than disappearing.
Why do paralegals score lower than lawyers would?
The regulatory protection in law belongs to the licensed attorney, who signs filings and carries the liability. Paralegals do much of the text-heavy work that AI handles well, without the licence that keeps a human legally responsible.
Is becoming a paralegal still a good idea?
It can be, with eyes open. BLS still expects about 40,800 openings a year, mostly replacements. Choose specialties built on people and evidence, learn the legal AI tools early, and treat the role as a path toward greater responsibility.
