Will AI replace electricians?

No, and AI is creating work for them. Electricians score 75.0/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Conditionally Viable), among the highest in the index. The work is physical, licensed and safety-critical, and BLS lists AI and the data centers behind it among the reasons electricity demand, and demand for electricians, is rising. AI will mainly change the paperwork: estimates, load calculations and permits.

How the score breaks down

Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.

Why each dimension scores the way it does

Automation Replaceability4 / 5 · 18.75 of 25 pts

Rated 4. Installing wiring, fitting panels, pulling cable through finished buildings and repairing faults are hands-on tasks no software performs. The automatable work sits around the job: estimating, material takeoffs, load calculations, scheduling and permit paperwork. That matters to contractors' margins, which is why this is a 4 rather than a 5, but it is a small share of an electrician's hours.

Regulatory & Liability Friction4 / 5 · 15 of 20 pts

Rated 4. BLS reports that most states require electricians to pass a test and be licensed, with questions on the National Electrical Code and state and local codes. Work is generally permitted and inspected, and a mistake can start a fire or electrocute someone, so a licensed person must answer for it. It rates 4 rather than 5 because requirements vary by state, apprentices do much of the hands-on work under a licence holder, and personal liability is lighter than for a dentist or a structural engineer who stamps drawings.

Human Judgment Density3 / 5 · 7.5 of 15 pts

Rated 3. Tracing a fault through decades of undocumented alterations, reading blueprints against what is actually in the wall, and deciding how to bring an old installation up to code all take judgment. But much day-to-day work follows the code book closely, and AI tools can already help with code lookups and diagnosis, so judgment supports the score without driving it.

Physical-World Coupling5 / 5 · 15 of 15 pts

Rated 5, the maximum. The job happens in attics, crawlspaces, trenches, substations and server halls, and every building is different. General-purpose robots that can work safely in that variety, around live circuits and other trades, are nowhere near economical. This dimension, together with licensing, is what puts electricians near the top of the index.

Trust & Relationship Lock-In4 / 5 · 11.25 of 15 pts

Rated 4. Homeowners let an electrician into their house and rely on that person's work for their safety, and they call one they trust or one a neighbour recommends. General contractors keep using electrical subcontractors who pass inspection and show up on time. Marketplaces make simple jobs more price-competitive, which keeps this below the maximum.

AI Capital Intensity4 / 5 · 7.5 of 10 pts

Rated 4. Replacing electricians would need robots that navigate occupied buildings and handle live electrical work, a frontier-scale problem without a near-term product. It rates 4 rather than 5 because some electrical work is moving into controlled settings, such as prefabricated assemblies built in shops and repetitive installs on large sites, where automation is more realistic.

What AI changes, and what it does not

BLS lists the core duties of electricians. Sorted by exposure:

Most exposed to AI

  • Estimating jobs and preparing material lists, which software increasingly drafts
  • Load calculations, layouts and code lookups
  • Office work: scheduling, permits, invoicing and customer messages

Most durable

  • Installing and maintaining wiring, control and lighting systems
  • Inspecting components such as transformers and circuit breakers
  • Identifying electrical problems with testing devices and repairing them
  • Directing and training workers on installations and repairs

The labor market today

Median annual pay (May 2025)$63,190
Jobs (2025)821,000
Projected growth, 2025–35+9%
Openings per year, on average≈72,700
Typical path inApprenticeship, 4–5 years

BLS projects employment to grow much faster than average. It points to power systems needed in nearly every building, linking solar and wind generation to the grid, upgrading the national grid, and rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence and the data centers that support it.

That makes electricians one of the few occupations where AI adds work rather than removing it: every new data center, substation and grid upgrade needs licensed people on site. Most electricians learn the trade through a paid apprenticeship of 4 or 5 years.

How to raise your resistance

Your role is not the average

This score rates the occupation as a whole. Your exposure depends on what you actually do all day. The free Job Safety score asks about your specific role and day-to-day work, then scores you on four personal factors in about a minute.

Questions people ask

Will AI replace electricians?

No. Electrical work is hands-on, licensed and safety-critical, done in buildings that are all different. Electricians score among the highest of any occupation on the AI Resistance Index, and AI itself is increasing demand for their work.

How is AI creating jobs for electricians?

AI runs in data centers that use large amounts of electricity. BLS cites rising electricity demand from AI and data centers, together with grid upgrades and renewable generation, among the reasons it projects 9% growth for electricians from 2025 to 2035.

Is becoming an electrician a good choice if I am worried about AI?

It is one of the strongest. BLS expects about 72,700 openings a year, and most people enter through a paid apprenticeship rather than a degree. Licensing then protects the work in a way few office jobs can match.
