Will AI replace accountants and bookkeepers?
AI is splitting the field in two. Taken together, accounting and bookkeeping score 36.2/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Commoditized). Bookkeeping is the exposed half: BLS projects those jobs to shrink because software has automated much of the work. Licensed accountants who sign, audit and advise are the protected half, and BLS projects their jobs to grow.
Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.
How the score breaks down
Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.
| Dimension | Weight | Rating | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation Replaceability | 25% | 2 / 5 | 6.25 |
| Regulatory & Liability Friction | 20% | 4 / 5 | 15 |
| Human Judgment Density | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| Physical-World Coupling | 15% | 1 / 5 | 0 |
| Trust & Relationship Lock-In | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| AI Capital Intensity | 10% | 1 / 5 | 0 |
| Total | 100% | 36.2 |
Points are exact; the scoring engine rounds the total to one decimal.
Why each dimension scores the way it does
Rated 2. Categorising transactions, reconciling accounts, matching invoices and preparing routine returns are rule-based and data-rich, which is the ideal case for automation. BLS states that software innovations have already automated many tasks performed by bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks. The work that resists automation is a smaller share of total hours: unusual transactions, judgment calls and client-specific decisions.
Rated 4, the strongest dimension. Licensing creates a real moat at the top of the field. BLS notes that any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA, and that CPAs are licensed by state boards after a national exam and 150 semester hours of education. A signature carries personal liability that software cannot assume, which keeps a human in the loop for audits and attest work.
Rated 3. Estimates, revenue recognition, tax positions and fraud risk all require judgment, and those calls matter. But a large portion of accounting follows codified standards, and AI applies codified rules quickly and consistently. Judgment is concentrated in senior and advisory roles rather than spread across the whole occupation.
Rated 1, the weakest dimension alongside capital intensity. The work is almost entirely digital: ledgers, bank feeds, documents and filings. Nothing in the core workflow requires a person to be physically present, and remote and offshore bookkeeping already proved that, so there is no physical barrier slowing automation.
Rated 3. Small-business owners often stay for years with the accountant who knows their books, their history and their quirks, and that relationship is valuable. But price-sensitive clients can switch to software for routine needs, and the trust advantage protects the advisor who owns the relationship more than the staff doing the processing.
Rated 1. Competing with routine accounting work needs no frontier-scale investment by the buyer: AI-assisted bookkeeping and categorisation is increasingly built into the accounting software small businesses already use. When the substitute is cheap, already installed and improves with every update, adoption is fast.
Which tasks AI takes first
BLS lists the core duties of accountants and auditors, and separately tracks bookkeeping clerks. Sorted by exposure:
Most exposed to AI
- Organising and maintaining financial records, including transaction coding and reconciliations
- Data entry and bank and invoice matching, the core of bookkeeping clerk work
- Computing taxes owed and preparing routine tax returns
Most durable
- Examining financial statements for accuracy and legal compliance, and signing off
- Inspecting accounting systems and identifying potential fraud risks
- Assessing financial operations and recommending best practices to management
- Advising clients on cutting costs, growing revenue and improving profit
The labor market today
| Accountants and auditors: median pay (May 2025) | $83,680 |
| Accountants and auditors: jobs (2025) | 1,595,200 |
| Accountants and auditors: projected growth, 2025–35 | +5% |
| Bookkeeping clerks: median pay (May 2025) | $50,670 |
| Bookkeeping clerks: jobs (2025) | 1,532,400 |
| Bookkeeping clerks: projected change, 2025–35 | −6% |
The two sides of the field are heading in opposite directions. BLS expects bookkeeping clerk employment to decline because technological change is expected to reduce demand; all of its projected openings come from replacing people who retire or change careers. For accountants and auditors, BLS notes that AI and automation will take over routine tasks but says this is not expected to reduce overall demand.
That split is the story behind the combined score: the data-processing work is shrinking, and the licensed, judgment-heavy work is holding.
How to raise your resistance
- Move from recording to signing. Licensure and sign-off authority are the strongest protection in this field. The CPA path converts exposed processing work into protected attest and audit work.
- Sell judgment, not hours. Advisory work (tax planning, cash flow, pricing, risk) sits on the durable side of the task list. Bookkeeping by the hour sits on the exposed side.
- Supervise the automation. Firms still need someone accountable for what the software posts. Reviewing, correcting and certifying automated output is a growing role.
- Own the client relationship. Trust protects the person who owns the relationship. Being the named advisor a business calls before a big decision is harder to replace than being the person who processes their records.

Score my job — freeQuestions people ask
Will AI replace accountants?
Licensed accountants who audit, sign and advise are well protected, and BLS projects 5% growth for accountants and auditors from 2025 to 2035. Routine recording and processing work is being automated, so roles built mainly on that work are exposed.
Will AI replace bookkeepers?
Bookkeeping is the most exposed part of the field. BLS projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035, and attributes the decline to software automating many of their tasks.
Why does accounting score only 36.2 if CPAs are protected?
The score rates accounting and bookkeeping together, and most hours in that combined occupation are routine, digital and cheap to automate. The licensing moat is strong but covers a smaller share of the work, so it lifts the score without making the field resistant overall.
