Will AI replace web developers?
Not the whole job, but most of the routine build work is already exposed. Web development scores 30.0/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Commoditized): AI now writes and fixes much of the standard front-end and back-end code, while working out what a client actually needs, owning performance and security, and keeping a live site running still need a person.
Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.
How the score breaks down
Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.
| Dimension | Weight | Rating | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation Replaceability | 25% | 2 / 5 | 6.25 |
| Regulatory & Liability Friction | 20% | 2 / 5 | 5 |
| Human Judgment Density | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| Physical-World Coupling | 15% | 2 / 5 | 3.75 |
| Trust & Relationship Lock-In | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| AI Capital Intensity | 10% | 1 / 5 | 0 |
| Total | 100% | 30.0 |
Points are exact; the scoring engine rounds the total to one decimal.
Why each dimension scores the way it does
Rated 2. Writing HTML, CSS and common application code, building forms and pages from a design, and fixing routine bugs are exactly what AI coding assistants do well today. BLS itself says increasing use of AI for web development may soften employment growth and may let people in other jobs handle basic web work. What resists is integrating messy existing systems and deciding what to build.
Rated 2. No licence is required, and BLS notes that people can enter with anything from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree, often on the strength of a portfolio. Accessibility and privacy rules apply to many sites, but they constrain the output, not who or what produces it.
Rated 3. Choosing an architecture, trading speed against cost and maintainability, and translating vague client requests into something buildable take judgment. A large share of hours, though, goes to implementation that follows well-known patterns, which is where AI performs best.
Rated 2, near the floor. The work is done entirely on a screen and can be done from anywhere, which is also why it is easy to offshore. The small physical element is meetings and workshops with clients.
Rated 3. A developer who knows a client's systems and history is hard to swap out, and many small businesses stay with the person who built their site. That loyalty protects individuals inside a relationship, not the occupation, because site builders and AI tools give buyers cheap alternatives.
Rated 1, the weakest dimension. Competing with a web developer costs a buyer almost nothing: AI coding assistants and site builders are cheap monthly subscriptions. There is no capital barrier protecting the work.
Which tasks AI takes first
BLS describes the core duties of web developers. Sorted by how exposed each is to AI today:
Most exposed to AI
- Writing standard code such as HTML, CSS and common application logic, which AI assistants now produce from a description
- Creating and testing pages, interfaces and navigation menus from an existing design
- Integrating graphics, audio and video into a site
- Monitoring website traffic and producing routine reports
Most durable
- Meeting clients or management to work out what the site actually needs to do
- Designing how a site fits into existing systems, data and security requirements
- Owning performance, reliability and fixes on a live site that real customers depend on
The labor market today
| Median annual pay, web developers (May 2025) | $92,650 |
| Jobs, web developers (2025) | 87,400 |
| Projected growth, web developers, 2025–35 | +4% |
| Openings per year, developers and digital designers combined | ≈13,600 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor's degree (requirements vary) |
BLS projects web developer jobs to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035, and says increasing use of AI for web development may soften that growth. It also expects AI tools to let workers in other occupations handle basic web development tasks.
Growth and exposure are different questions. Companies can keep hiring for web work while the share of each project that needs a human developer shrinks. The AI Resistance Index measures the second: how much of the work AI can structurally take over.
How to raise your resistance
- Move from pages to systems. Integrations, data, authentication and performance under real traffic are where AI-generated code most often breaks. Developers who own those layers sit in the judgment-heavy part of the job.
- Use AI to sell outcomes, not hours. Clients will not keep paying for hours that an assistant compresses. Developers who price by outcome and use AI to deliver faster keep the margin instead of losing it.
- Own the live site. Hosting, monitoring, security patching and being the person called when the site goes down build the trust that a one-off build never does.
- Specialize where mistakes are costly. Accessibility, payments, healthcare and regulated industries punish errors, which raises the value of a named, accountable developer.
This score rates the occupation as a whole. Your exposure depends on what you actually do all day. The free Job Safety score asks about your specific role and day-to-day work, then rates your role on the same six dimensions in about a minute.

Questions people ask
Will AI replace web developers?
Not entirely, but it is already absorbing routine build work: standard pages, forms and common code. The web developer score of 30.0/100 reflects that. Roles built on integration, performance and owning live systems hold up better than roles built on turning designs into pages.
Is web development still a good career?
BLS projects 4% growth for web developers from 2025 to 2035, with a median pay of $92,650 in May 2025, but it also says AI may soften that growth. The safer path is toward systems, security and client-facing work rather than pure page building.
What part of web development is most exposed to AI?
Writing standard code from a description or design. AI coding assistants do this well and cheaply, which is why automation replaceability rates only 2 of 5 and AI capital intensity 1 of 5.
