Will AI replace legal secretaries?
Much of the role is exposed. Legal secretarial work scores 33.8/100 on the AI Resistance Index (Commoditized): drafting standard documents, formatting filings, checking citations and managing calendars are exactly what AI and legal software now do, and BLS already projects these jobs to shrink by 2035. Confidential client contact and knowing how a particular firm and court work hold up best.
Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.
How the score breaks down
Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.
| Dimension | Weight | Rating | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation Replaceability | 25% | 2 / 5 | 6.25 |
| Regulatory & Liability Friction | 20% | 3 / 5 | 10 |
| Human Judgment Density | 15% | 2 / 5 | 3.75 |
| Physical-World Coupling | 15% | 2 / 5 | 3.75 |
| Trust & Relationship Lock-In | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| AI Capital Intensity | 10% | 2 / 5 | 2.5 |
| Total | 100% | 33.8 |

Why each dimension scores the way it does
Rated 2, the weakest dimension. BLS lists preparing summonses, complaints, motions and subpoenas, and verifying quotes and citations in legal briefs, among the core duties. Document automation and AI drafting tools handle these well, and BLS notes AI systems and digital tools let staff prepare their own documents.
Rated 3, the strongest dimension. Legal work runs on confidentiality, court deadlines and filing rules, and mistakes carry real consequences for the firm, which keeps a careful person checking. The attorney, not the secretary, carries the professional responsibility, which limits the protection.
Rated 2. Most tasks follow established procedures and templates, under an attorney's or paralegal's supervision. Judgment shows up in prioritizing deadlines and catching errors rather than in the substance of the legal work. Experienced legal secretaries add value by spotting problems early, but the work itself is defined by procedure.
Rated 2. The work is done at a desk and increasingly remotely, with electronic filing now common. Handling physical files and delivering documents in person is a shrinking share of the job. Firms that adopt remote work and electronic filing can draw on secretarial support from anywhere, or replace it with software.
Rated 3. Attorneys rely on an experienced secretary who knows their cases, clients and habits, and replacing that knowledge is disruptive. That trust protects individuals inside a firm, though, not the role as a whole. Newer staff and pooled support teams have little of this protection, because their work is defined by tasks.
Rated 2. Legal document automation and AI drafting tools are sold to firms of every size at subscription prices, so adopting them does not take unusual capital, even for small practices. Many of these features now come inside the word processing and practice management software firms already pay for.

The labor market today
| Median annual pay, legal secretaries and administrative assistants (May 2025) | $55,570 |
| Jobs, legal secretaries and administrative assistants (2025) | 157,600 |
| Projected change, 2025–35 | −5% |
| Openings per year, all secretaries and administrative assistants | ≈314,400 |
| Typical entry-level education, secretaries and administrative assistants | High school diploma or equivalent |
BLS projects legal secretaries and administrative assistants to decline 5% from 2025 to 2035, a loss of about 8,300 jobs. For the occupation group as a whole, BLS notes that technology, including AI systems and digital tools, lets staff prepare their own documents without the help of secretaries.
Exposure and decline point the same way. The score of 33.8 reflects routine document work that software already does, with the protected part of the role in discretion, deadlines and knowing the firm. Firms keep the people who make them faster.
How to raise your resistance
- Become the firm's systems expert. Running the document automation, e-filing and practice management tools makes you the person who makes the technology work.
- Own the deadlines. Docketing and deadline management carry real consequences, which raises the value of a careful, accountable person.
- Specialize. Practice areas with complex procedures, such as litigation, immigration or estates, reward knowledge that generic tools lack.
- Be the client's first contact. Discreet, reliable contact with clients builds the trust that keeps you central to a practice.
This score rates the occupation as a whole. Your exposure depends on what you actually do all day. The free Job Safety score asks about your specific role and day-to-day work, then rates your role on the same six dimensions in about a minute.
