Will AI replace financial advisors?
Partly. Financial advisors score 40.0/100 on the AI Resistance Index (AI-Vulnerable), right at the bottom of that band. Portfolio building, rebalancing and basic planning are already sold by software for much lower fees, and BLS now says AI tools may moderate demand for advisors. What protects the job is regulation and trust: people still want a person for complex decisions about their money.
Higher is safer. Scored on six structural dimensions, weighted as shown below.
How the score breaks down
Each dimension is rated 1 (AI holds every advantage) to 5 (strong structural protection). A rating's contribution is (rating − 1) ÷ 4 × weight, so a 1 contributes nothing and a 5 contributes the full weight.
| Dimension | Weight | Rating | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation Replaceability | 25% | 2 / 5 | 6.25 |
| Regulatory & Liability Friction | 20% | 4 / 5 | 15 |
| Human Judgment Density | 15% | 3 / 5 | 7.5 |
| Physical-World Coupling | 15% | 1 / 5 | 0 |
| Trust & Relationship Lock-In | 15% | 4 / 5 | 11.25 |
| AI Capital Intensity | 10% | 1 / 5 | 0 |
| Total | 100% | 40.0 |

Why each dimension scores the way it does
Rated 2. Building a diversified portfolio, rebalancing it, harvesting tax losses and projecting retirement income are rule-based tasks that automated investment services already perform for millions of accounts. Research and account monitoring are similar. It rates 2 rather than 1 because advice for complicated situations, such as a business sale, an inheritance or a divorce, still needs someone to gather the facts and weigh competing goals.
Rated 4. Advisors who buy or sell securities or give specific investment advice need product licences, and firms that manage client money must register with state regulators or the SEC, according to BLS. Advisors acting as fiduciaries carry a legal duty to put the client first, and regulators expect a responsible person behind the advice. Automated advice is legal and regulated too, which stops this short of 5.
Rated 3. Much of planning follows established methods, but the valuable moments involve judgment under uncertainty: when to sell a concentrated stock position, how to fund care for a parent, or how to talk a client out of panic selling in a downturn. Those calls depend on values and circumstances that are hard to specify, while routine allocation does not.
Rated 1, the minimum. Financial advice is information work on digital accounts. Meetings can happen by video, money moves electronically and statements are generated automatically. Nothing in the core service requires being in a particular place or handling physical objects, so this dimension offers financial advisors no protection at all.
Rated 4. People share fears about retirement, debt and family with an advisor they trust, and many stay with the same advisor for decades. BLS expects many consumers to keep relying on human advisors for complex and specialised advice even as AI tools spread. Younger clients and simpler accounts are the most willing to switch to automated services, which keeps this from 5.
Rated 1. Automated portfolio management is a mature, inexpensive product offered by large brokerages and startups alike, and general AI assistants now explain financial concepts for free. Competing with the routine side of financial advice needs no special data or infrastructure that only large firms can afford, so capital is no barrier here.

The labor market today
| Median annual pay (May 2025) | $105,070 |
| Jobs (2025) | 299,400 |
| Projected change, 2025–35 | 1% (slower than average) |
| Openings per year, on average | ≈17,100 |
| Typical entry-level education | Bachelor's degree |
BLS projects employment of personal financial advisors to grow just 1% from 2025 to 2035, slower than average, and says the availability of AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand. It still expects about 17,100 openings a year, mostly replacements, as retiring baby boomers and younger earners seek planning advice.
BLS also expects many consumers to keep relying on human advisors for complex and specialised advice. The squeeze falls on advisors whose value is picking funds; the ones who hold up are the advisors clients call before a big decision.
How to raise your resistance
- Sell planning, not portfolios. Investment selection is the commodity. Tax, retirement income, estate and business-succession planning are where clients still pay for a person.
- Niche down. Advisors who serve one group, such as physicians, small-business owners or people approaching retirement, build expertise and referral networks that general automated services cannot match.
- Use the tools, show the judgment. Let software handle rebalancing and reporting, and spend the freed time on client conversations. Clients see the value in the advice, not the spreadsheet.
- Commit to fiduciary duty. Registration and designations that bind you to act in the client's interest strengthen the trust that is this job's strongest protection.

Will AI replace financial advisors?
AI will take much of the routine work, and BLS says AI tools may moderate demand, projecting just 1% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. It also expects many people to keep relying on human advisors for complex advice, so the role narrows toward planning and judgment rather than disappearing.
Are robo-advisors better than human advisors?
For a simple, long-term portfolio, automated services do the job at low cost. A human advisor earns the fee when your situation is complicated or when you need someone to stop you making an emotional mistake.
Is becoming a financial advisor still a good career?
It can be. The median pay was $105,070 in May 2025, and BLS still projects about 17,100 openings a year. The safest path is planning-led work for clients with complex needs, not a role built on picking investments.
